Just last week, Penguin Refrigerated successfully completed a specialist transportation job in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). This operation involved the safe delivery of an extremely rare cargo, cool-stow bio-fish collected from the Antarctic Ocean, as part of an ongoing scientific research initiative aimed at understanding the biodiversity and environmental dynamics of one of the most remote and fragile ecosystems on Earth.
The operation began with the British Antarctic Survey team, aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough, gathering a unique consignment of cold-stored fish specimens. These bio-fish samples are crucial for ongoing research into climate change, marine biology, and sustainable ecosystems in polar regions. Once the vessel returned to the UK, Penguin Refrigerated was entrusted with the critical task of collecting and transporting the sensitive biological cargo with pinpoint temperature accuracy.
To meet the strict biological handling requirements, Penguin deployed two 18-tonne refrigerated vehicles – each tailored for distinct temperature needs. One vehicle was maintained at -20°C to preserve frozen specimens, while the other was calibrated at 4°C for samples that required controlled chilled conditions. This dual-temperature solution ensured that each batch of bio-fish remained within its precise thermal window, safeguarding the integrity of the research materials throughout the journey from dock to laboratory.
For Penguin Refrigerated, the symbolism of this mission wasn’t lost. Transporting Antarctic marine specimens, from the natural habitat of real penguins, felt especially meaningful for the team.
